History & context

This is a small Romano-British farmstead and associated rectilinear field system on the limestone plateau of the White Peak, part of the well-known Roystone Grange archaeological landscape in Derbyshire. Occupation appears to span the 2nd to 4th centuries AD, comprising a modest stone-founded farmstead set within a coaxial system of low stone walls (lynchets and rubble banks) defining small enclosed fields and stock paddocks.

Significance

Historical significance

The site forms part of one of the most completely preserved and intensively studied Romano-British rural landscapes in northern England, demonstrating low-status pastoral and mixed farming in the hinterland of the Peak District lead-mining zone, likely linked economically to the military and civilian markets at Navio (Brough-on-Noe) and Buxton (Aquae Arnemetiae). Its survival as upstanding earthworks alongside contemporary fields makes it an important type-site for upland Romano-British settlement.

Archaeological record

Survey and excavation in the Roystone Grange area by Richard Hodges and colleagues (1978 onwards) identified the settlement through earthwork survey, with stone wall footings, a possible building platform, and finds of Derbyshire ware and other coarse pottery indicating later Roman activity; faunal and environmental evidence from the wider project points to sheep husbandry as the dominant activity.
