History & context

This is a stretch of the defensive circuit of Lindum Colonia, originating as the legionary fortress of Legio IX Hispana (and later Legio II Adiutrix) c. AD 60–78, before being refounded as a colonia for veterans c. AD 90. The earth-and-timber rampart of the fortress was rebuilt in stone, probably in the early–mid 2nd century, with the wall heightened and the ditch system enlarged into the late Roman period (3rd–4th century) as the upper colonia was maintained as a defended urban core.

Historical significance

Lincoln was one of only four coloniae in Britain, and its walls — enclosing both the original hilltop circuit and a southern extension down the slope to the Witham — marked it as an administrative and economic centre of the civitas and a key node on Ermine Street. The north-eastern stretch is significant because the curtain here was kept in repair into the late Roman period and influenced the alignment of the medieval city defences.
