Overview

History & context

Thenford is the site of a Romano-British villa in south Northamptonshire, situated in the rolling country between the Cherwell and the upper Nene. Like other villas in this region, it appears to have developed from a modest farmstead in the 2nd century into a more substantial stone-built establishment during the 3rd and 4th centuries, occupying productive agricultural land near the Roman road network linking Towcester (Lactodurum) and Alchester.

Significance

Historical significance

The villa formed part of a dense pattern of rural estates in the south Midlands whose economy was tied to mixed arable and pastoral production, likely supplying nearby small towns and the wider regional market. It is one of several known villas in the Banbury–Brackley corridor, reflecting the prosperity of this part of the civitas of the Catuvellauni (or possibly Dobunni, depending on boundary interpretation) in the later Roman period.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Evidence at Thenford includes building remains, tesserae, and pottery recovered through fieldwalking and limited investigation, with a Roman bath-house or heated range indicated by tile and hypocaust material; a nearby cemetery and other Roman finds have also been recorded in the parish. No large-scale modern excavation has been published, however, and the plan and full chronology of the villa remain poorly defined.
