History & context

Vindocladia was a Romano-British roadside settlement in eastern Dorset, located in the vicinity of Badbury Rings near Shapwick, on the Roman road network linking Dorchester (Durnovaria) with Old Sarum (Sorviodunum) and the south coast. It is named in the Antonine Itinerary (Iter XV) as a station between Sorviodunum and Durnovaria, and was active from at least the later 1st century AD through the 4th century.

Significance

Historical significance

The settlement's importance lay in its position as a road junction and posting station where the road from Badbury Rings met routes leading to Hamworthy/Poole Harbour and Bath, making it a minor but functionally significant node in the communications network of Durotrigian territory. Its proximity to the major Iron Age hillfort of Badbury Rings suggests continuity of regional centrality from the pre-Roman period.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Aerial photography, geophysics, and field survey (notably work by the National Trust on the Kingston Lacy estate and by Bournemouth University around Badbury) have revealed a substantial nucleated settlement of streets, enclosures, and buildings, along with a clear road junction and surrounding field systems, though large-scale open-area excavation has been limited. Surface finds include pottery, coins, and building debris consistent with occupation spanning the Roman period; no major public buildings have been confirmed.
