Overview

History & context

Walton-on-the-Hill was the site of a Romano-British villa on the dip slope of the North Downs in Surrey, occupied broadly within the 2nd–4th centuries AD. It appears to have been a modest rural establishment of the type common in the Surrey/north Downs hinterland of Londinium, likely the centre of a mixed agricultural estate rather than a high-status courtyard villa.

Significance

Historical significance

The villa forms part of a scatter of small-to-middling Roman rural sites on the Downs south of London (alongside Ashtead, Titsey, Beddington and Chelsham), supplying agricultural produce to the urban and military markets of the capital and the road network running south from it. Its position reflects the economic integration of the Surrey chalk and clay-with-flints landscape into Londinium's productive hinterland.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Antiquarian and early 20th-century investigations recorded building remains including flint and tile foundations, roofing tile, painted wall plaster, and pottery indicating occupation across the Roman period, with some evidence for a bath suite or heated rooms; however, no full modern excavation has been published and the plan of the villa is poorly understood. The site is known principally through these limited recoveries and surface finds rather than systematic fieldwork.
