The Wickwar Roman small town lies in south Gloucestershire on relatively low-lying ground in the upper Little Avon valley, roughly midway between Cirencester (Corinium) and the Severn estuary. Cropmark, geophysical and surface evidence indicate a nucleated roadside settlement of probable 2nd- to 4th-century date, with enclosures, trackways and probable building plots spread over several hectares — characteristic of the "small town" tier of civilian sites in the civitas Dobunnorum.

It functioned as a local market and route-node in the rural hinterland of Corinium, on or close to a minor road linking the Fosse Way corridor with the Severn crossings; such places were the economic glue of the region, servicing surrounding villa estates (the South Cotswold villa belt lies immediately to the east) and agricultural producers rather than performing administrative roles.
Aerial photography and geophysical survey have revealed a substantial complex of ditched enclosures, linear boundaries and stone-building footprints, with surface scatters of Roman pottery, tile and coinage recovered through fieldwalking and metal-detecting; no large-scale published excavation has taken place, so internal chronology, building forms and the precise extent of the settlement remain poorly defined.
