Overview

History & context

Worthy Down was a long-lived rural settlement on the chalk downland north of Venta Belgarum (Winchester), occupied from the Middle Iron Age through to the 3rd or 4th century A.D. It appears to have been an unenclosed, dispersed agricultural settlement of native character, with continuity of occupation across the Conquest and gradual adoption of Romanised material culture rather than any sharp transformation.

Significance

Historical significance

The site is a useful example of the persistence of indigenous farming communities in the territory of the Belgae, contributing to the agricultural hinterland that supplied Winchester and the wider Hampshire downs. Its long sequence makes it valuable for tracking the social and economic trajectory of a "small" rural settlement through the Romano-British period.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Investigations in the early 20th century (notably by J.P. Williams-Freeman and later observations during military construction on the airfield) recorded pits, ditches, hut circles, inhumations and cremations, along with Iron Age and Romano-British pottery, querns, loomweights, and coins indicating activity into the later Roman period. The site has not been the subject of modern large-scale open-area excavation, and its full plan and internal organisation remain poorly understood.
