Overview

History & context

Yarchester (sometimes Yarchester or Eaton Constantine area, Shropshire) is a Romano-British villa lying in the rural hinterland of Viroconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter), roughly 8 km to the east of the civitas capital. It was a corridor villa forming part of a wider courtyard complex, occupied by the early 3rd century A.D. and likely continuing into the 4th century, on the pattern of other Cornovian villas in the Severn valley.

Significance

Historical significance

The site is significant as one of a relatively small number of substantial villas known in the territory of the Cornovii, a region historically considered "villa-poor" compared with southern Britain; its presence reinforces the picture of a productive agricultural estate landscape supporting Wroxeter, then one of the largest towns in Roman Britain.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Investigation has been limited, but aerial photography and geophysical/earthwork survey have revealed the corridor range and an arrangement of ancillary buildings around a courtyard, with surface finds of tile, building stone and pottery indicative of a masonry establishment of some pretension. No major modern excavation has been published, and details of internal plan, mosaics, or bath suite remain poorly known for this particular site.
