In one of the most egregious acts of Bacon's indiscriminate campaign, his forces attacked the Pamunkey — a tribe that had been loyal English allies since the 1646 treaty — killing many and enslaving survivors. The attack on friendly Native Americans demonstrated that Bacon's stated goal of "Indian defense" masked a broader agenda of land seizure and Native elimination. Governor Berkeley denounced the raids as illegal, deepening the rupture that led to civil war.
