Governor Berkeley personally led the campaign that ended the Third Anglo-Powhatan War. Berkeley's forces defeated Powhatan warriors in a series of engagements along the Pamunkey River and captured the ancient chief Opechancanough, ending organized Powhatan resistance. The campaign concluded with the Treaty of 1646 confining surviving Powhatan to reservations — the first Native American reservation system in English America.
