Bacon's unauthorized campaign against Native Americans began with the destruction of the Ocaneechee, a tribe that controlled key trading routes along the Roanoke River. The Ocaneechee had actually aided Bacon by capturing Susquehannock prisoners, but Bacon then turned on his allies. The attack demonstrated Bacon's indiscriminate hostility toward all Native Americans and helped precipitate his open rebellion against Governor Berkeley.
