The Treaty of San Lorenzo, negotiated by Thomas Pinckney, secured American navigation rights on the Mississippi River and established the 31st parallel as the southern boundary of the United States. Spain agreed to withdraw from the Natchez District, which had been disputed since the 1783 Treaty of Paris. The US organized the region as Mississippi Territory in 1798 after Spanish forces evacuated Fort Panmure at Natchez.
