A. E. Waite was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1857 and died in 1942. He worked as a poet, non-fiction writer, translator, occultist, and opinion journalist. He wrote extensively on the occult and Western esotericism, and co-created the Rider–Waite Tarot. According to his biographer R. A. Gilbert, Waite was the first to attempt a systematic study of the history of Western occultism as a spiritual tradition rather than as aspects of protoscience or as the pathology of religion.
