Biography

Abel Parker Upshur was a lawyer and politician from the Eastern Shore of Virginia who served as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of State under President John Tyler. He negotiated the treaty leading to the 1845 Texas annexation and worked to ensure Texas entered the Union as a slave state. Upshur died on February 28, 1844, when a gun aboard the USS Princeton exploded during a demonstration.
