Al Smith was a politician born in Manhattan on December 30, 1873. He served as the 42nd governor of New York from 1919 to 1920 and again from 1923 to 1928. A Democrat, he was his party's presidential nominee in 1928, when he lost to Republican Herbert Hoover. He died on October 4, 1944.
