Biography
Alex Haley was born in Ithaca, New York on August 11, 1921, and worked as a novelist, journalist, historian, screenwriter, and military personnel. His first book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published in 1965, resulted from extensive interviews with Malcolm X. He wrote Roots: The Saga of an American Family, published in 1976, which ABC adapted as a television miniseries that aired in 1977 and reached 130 million viewers. The book and miniseries heightened public awareness of black American history and generated widespread interest in genealogy and family history. Haley died on February 10, 1992.
