Alex North was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on December 4, 1910, and worked as a jazz musician, film score composer, bandleader, and conductor. He composed scores for films including A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, Spartacus, Cleopatra, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. He received fifteen Academy Award nominations for his film work, though he did not win any of them; he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1986, which was the first such honor given to a composer. He died on September 8, 1991.
