Biography

Alfred L. Kroeber was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1876 and worked as an anthropologist, archaeologist, ethnologist, linguist, and sociologist. He earned his PhD under Franz Boas at Columbia University in 1901, becoming the recipient of Columbia's first doctorate in anthropology. At the University of California, Berkeley, he held the position of first professor appointed to the Department of Anthropology and served as director of its Museum of Anthropology from 1909 to 1947. He conducted extended study of Ishi, the last surviving member of the Yahi people. Kroeber died in 1960.
