Alfred Thayer Mahan was born in West Point, New York, in 1840 and died in 1914. He served as a naval officer and military historian whose 1890 work *The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783* gained immediate recognition, particularly in Europe. His 1892 follow-up, *The Influence of Sea Power upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793–1812*, established him as a military strategist and theorist known globally. His writings promoted the development of large capital ships and supported the concepts of decisive naval battles and naval blockades.
