Andre Norton was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1912 and died in 2005. She wrote science fiction and fantasy, as well as historical and contemporary fiction, publishing primarily under the pen name Andre Norton and also under Andrew North and Allen Weston. She was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy award, the first woman to receive the SFWA Grand Master award, and the first woman inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
