Biography

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and died in 1893. He served as Cincinnati's city solicitor from 1858 to 1861 and defended refugee slaves in court proceedings. During the Civil War, Hayes joined the Union army, where he was wounded five times, including at the Battle of South Mountain in 1862, and rose to the rank of brevet major general. He served in Congress from 1865 to 1867, was elected governor of Ohio for two consecutive terms from 1868 to 1872 and part of a third from 1876 to 1877, and then became the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881.
