She appeared in Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine on Broadway from 1941 to 1942, and signed with Universal Studios in the 1940s before making her film debut in Chip Off the Old Block in 1944. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Veda Pierce in Mildred Pierce, which was released in 1945.
