Biography

Annie Jump Cannon was born in Dover, Delaware on December 11, 1863, and worked as an astronomer and astrophysicist. She developed the Harvard Classification Scheme with Edward C. Pickering, which organized and classified stars based on their temperatures and spectral types. After contracting scarlet fever in 1893, she became nearly deaf, a condition that persisted through her working life. She died on April 13, 1941, and was active as a suffragist and member of the National Women's Party.
