Louis McLane was born in Smyrna, Delaware on May 28, 1786, and died on October 7, 1857. A lawyer and politician with connections to Wilmington, Delaware and Baltimore, Maryland, he served as a U.S. representative and senator from Delaware, held the offices of Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State, acted as ambassador to Great Britain, and served as president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He fought in the War of 1812 and was affiliated with both the Federalist Party and the Democratic Party.
