Biography

Anwar al-Awlaqi was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1971. An American-Yemeni Islamic cleric and lecturer, he was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011, becoming the first U.S. citizen to be targeted and assassinated by the U.S. government through drone strike. He held dual citizenship in the United States and Yemen and was a key organizer for al-Qaeda.
