Biography

Conrad Nicholson Hilton was born on December 25, 1887, in San Antonio, New Mexico, and died on January 3, 1979. He served as a Republican representative in the first New Mexico Legislature from 1912 to 1916 but grew dissatisfied with what he saw as corrupt political dealings. In 1919, he bought the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas, for $40,000, taking advantage of the regional oil boom by renting rooms in eight-hour shifts. He went on to purchase and sell additional hotels, eventually building the world's first international hotel chain, and bequeathed the majority of his estate to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
