Biography
Benjamin Morrell was born in Rye, New York, in 1795 and worked as a sea captain, explorer, and trader. He conducted voyages to the Atlantic, Southern Ocean, and Pacific Islands, and published a ghost-written memoir titled A Narrative of Four Voyages covering his activities between 1823 and 1832. The memoir contained numerous claims of discovery and achievement that geographers and historians have disputed, with some proven false. He concluded his career as a fugitive after wrecking his ship and misappropriating portions of salvaged cargo, dying in 1839.
