Biography

Benny Golson was born in Philadelphia on January 25, 1929, and died on September 21, 2024. A tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger, he gained prominence as a writer for the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie before pursuing a solo career. In 1959, he co-founded and co-led The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, he worked as an arranger for film and television, during which time he performed less frequently, though he and Farmer revived The Jazztet in 1982.
