Biography

Bill Tilden was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1893 and worked as a tennis player and coach. He held the world No. 1 amateur ranking from 1920 to 1925, and was ranked world No. 1 professional in 1931, 1932, and 1933. Tilden won 14 Major singles titles across amateur and professional competitions, including 10 Grand Slam events, and claimed seven U.S. Championships titles. He won Wimbledon in 1920, becoming the first American man to do so. He died in 1953.
