Billy Eckstine was born in Pittsburgh in 1914 and worked as a jazz and pop singer, bandleader, and musician during the swing and bebop eras. He possessed a bass-baritone voice and led a band whose approach to popular songs shaped singers including Earl Coleman, Johnny Hartman, Joe Williams, Arthur Prysock, and Lou Rawls. His recording of "I Apologize" received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999, and he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 2019. He died in 1993.
