Bob Mathias was born in Tulare, California in 1930. He competed as a decathlete for the United States, winning Olympic gold medals in the decathlon at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Games. He later served as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives for California's 18th congressional district across four terms between 1967 and 1975, and worked as a television actor and military officer. He died in 2006.
