Bruce Nathan Ames was born in New York City in 1928 and worked as a biochemist and molecular biologist. He held the position of professor of biochemistry and Molecular Biology Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and served as a senior scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. Ames developed the Ames test, an assay used to evaluate whether compounds are mutagenic, and made contributions to understanding mutagenesis and DNA repair mechanisms.
