Biography

Burton Richter, a physicist born in New York City in 1931, led the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center team that co-discovered the J/ψ meson in 1974, a finding made independently by Samuel Ting's team at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Richter and Ting shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1976 for this discovery. He served as SLAC director from 1984 to 1999 and died in 2018.
