Charles Francis Richter was born in Overpeck, Ohio, in 1900 and worked as a seismologist, geophysicist, geologist, and mathematician. He developed the Richter scale in collaboration with Beno Gutenberg at the California Institute of Technology, first employing it in 1935; the scale remained in widespread use for measuring earthquake magnitude until the moment magnitude scale emerged in 1979. Richter died in 1985.
