Biography

Charles Jewtraw was born in Clinton County, New York on 5 May 1900 and died on 26 January 1996. A speed skater, he won the first gold medal awarded at the 1924 Winter Olympics, though he placed eighth in the 1500 m and thirteenth in the 5000 m events at those Games. He won national titles in 1921 and 1923 and held the national record in 100 yards at 9.4 seconds. After the 1924 Olympics he retired from competition and became a representative for the Spalding Sporting Goods Company in New York.
