Charles Mackerras was born in Schenectady, New York, in 1925 and died in 2010. An American-born Australian conductor, he worked as a classical oboist, music arranger, editor, and composer. He was associated with the English National Opera and Welsh National Opera, and served as the first Australian chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He specialized in the operas of Janáček and Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, and Czech music, recording extensively for the Czech label Supraphon.
