Charles Martin Hall was born in Thompson Township, Ohio, in 1863 and died in 1914. A chemist and inventor, he developed a method for producing aluminium in 1886. He was among the founders of what became Alcoa, the company established with Alfred E. Hunt and others who together raised $20,000 to launch the Pittsburgh Reduction Company.
