Biography

Charles Thomas Kowal was an American astronomer born in Buffalo, New York in 1940. From 1961 to 1984 he worked as a staff astronomer at Caltech's Mount Wilson and Palomar Mountain observatories, where he found 2060 Chiron, discovered two moons of Jupiter, and discovered or co-discovered asteroids, comets, and supernovae. In 1979 he received the James Craig Watson Medal for his contributions to astronomy. He died in 2011.
