Chester A. Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont, on October 5, 1829, and worked as an educator, lawyer, military officer, politician, and statesperson. He served as the 20th vice president under James A. Garfield in 1881 and became the 21st president after Garfield's assassination, holding office until 1885. During his presidency, the U.S. Navy underwent its largest expansion to that point, the spoils system ended, and stricter rules were put in place for migrants entering the country. He died on November 18, 1886.
