Leonard "Chico" Marx was born in Manhattan in 1887 and worked as a comedian, actor, pianist, bandleader, and stage performer. He was the oldest of five brothers in the Marx Brothers comedy troupe, which included Arthur, Julius, Milton, and Herbert. In the act, his character was a cunning con artist of apparent rural Italian descent who wore shabby clothes, a curly-haired wig, and a Tyrolean hat. On film, he frequently appeared alongside his brother Harpo as partners in schemes and often attempted to outwit his brother Groucho.
