Biography

Emily "Cissy" Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1933 and became a soul and gospel singer. She began her career singing with her siblings in the Drinkard Singers before working as a session vocalist for rhythm and blues, soul, rock and roll, and pop musicians in the early 1960s. Houston co-founded the Sweet Inspirations in 1967 with her niece Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith, and Estelle Brown; the group signed with Atlantic Records that year and recorded four albums before Houston left for a solo career in 1970. Her solo singles included "I'll Be There," which reached the top 20 on the R&B chart, and "Think It Over," a top 5 dance single, and she won two Grammy Awards in the Traditional Gospel Album category. Houston died on October 7, 2024.
