Biography

Clifford Odets was born in Philadelphia in 1906 and worked as a playwright, screenwriter, and actor. Beginning in January 1935, his socially relevant dramas proved extremely influential through the remainder of the Great Depression, and his works inspired subsequent generations of playwrights including Arthur Miller, Paddy Chayefsky, Neil Simon, and David Mamet. After his play Clash by Night was produced in the 1941–42 season, he shifted focus toward film projects and remained in Hollywood until mid-1948, then returned to New York for five and a half years to produce three more Broadway plays. He died in 1963.
