American biologist and Nobel laureate (1938–2025)
Biography
David Baltimore was born in Manhattan in 1938 and worked as a virologist, microbiologist, geneticist, and biochemist. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975 and served as a professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology, where he was president from 1997 to 2006. He founded the Whitehead Institute and directed it from 1982 to 1990, and in 2008 he served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
