Delmer Daves was born in San Francisco on July 24, 1904, and worked as a screenwriter, film director, and producer. He made films across multiple genres, including film noir and warfare pictures, and directed Broken Arrow, The Last Wagon, 3:10 to Yuma, and The Hanging Tree. After experiencing heart trouble in 1959, he was required to work exclusively on studio-based films, among them A Summer Place, which achieved substantial commercial success. He died on August 17, 1977.
