Biography

Dick Button was born in Englewood, New Jersey in 1929 and died on January 30, 2025. An American figure skater and skating analyst, he won two Olympic championships and five consecutive world titles between 1948 and 1952, and was the only non-European man to win the European championship. Button landed the double Axel jump in competition in 1948 and the triple loop in 1952, both claimed as firsts, and invented the flying camel spin, originally called the "Button camel." He brought increased athleticism to figure skating after World War II and exemplified what figure skating historians called the "American School," a more athletic approach than the European style.
