Biography

Donald Eugene Cherry was born in Oklahoma City in 1936 and died in 1995. A jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist, he performed with saxophonist Ornette Coleman's bands from the late 1950s onward, appearing on The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) and Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation (1961). He also worked with John Coltrane, Charlie Haden, Sun Ra, Ed Blackwell, the New York Contemporary Five, and Albert Ayler.
