Dorothy Stang was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1931 and worked as a Christian nun and missionary. She was outspoken in her efforts on behalf of the poor and the environment, and had received death threats from loggers and landowners. She was murdered in Anapu, Pará, in the Amazon Basin in 2005.
