Edith Windsor was born in Philadelphia in 1929 and worked as a programmer, mathematician, computer scientist, and activist. She served as a technology manager at IBM. In 2013, she was the lead plaintiff in United States v. Windsor, a Supreme Court case that overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. Following the decision, the Obama administration and federal agencies extended rights, privileges and benefits to married same-sex couples.
