Elbert Green Hubbard was born in Bloomington, Illinois in 1856 and worked as a writer, publisher, journalist, and philosopher. He grew up in Hudson, Illinois and achieved early success as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. He founded the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York and was an exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement. He died on May 7, 1915.
