Biography
Elinor Ostrom was born in Los Angeles in 1933 and died in 2012. A political scientist and economist, her work engaged with New Institutional Economics and the resurgence of political economy. In 2009 she received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, shared with Oliver E. Williamson, for her analysis of economic governance and the commons; she was the first woman to receive this prize.
